Breaking in Your Custom Cloth Diapers

All diapers come to you made with brand new, unwashed fabric. These fabrics are all manufactured with softeners (the darker the coloring the more it has) and those softeners will repel moisture. Not a good combination with a cloth diaper.

Why are the fabrics not washed before they are sewn?  In order for the huge selection of fabrics, they are bought in large quanities (typically the whole bolt); this is not time efficient for your custom orders. Also in order for the softeners to be removed, several washings are usually neccessary, not just one.

What this means for you: You need sometimes 8 -10 washing to get the fabrics “open” to absorbtion. The best way to do that is a HOT, HOT wash without detergent. Run you washer with the hotest water you can get and let that water just agitate thru your diapers and the softeners will come free. The best analogy is getting a new bath towel at the store and you get it home and it just isn’t as good as your old ratty towels you’ve had for years. Why? The softeners make the fabric less absorbant and you need to wash it to get it soft and ”broken in”.
